Augusta, KY Schoolhouse Transformed into a Beautiful Cabin Oasis

Last Spring, we had the opportunity to work with one of our favorite clients on their weekend-getaway cabin located in Augusta, KY. Built in 1797, this wondrous log cabin is thought to be the oldest standing schoolhouse in the Tri-State Area. There is a surrealist aspect to the building, attributing to the high-level of craftsmanship that allowed this building to survive both the Civil War and periods of Ohio River flooding.

The home’s beauty and unique character are truly astounding to view and tour. The cabin has been thoughtfully restored and updated by our clients, who bought the cabin in 2016. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places. Our design plan for the home honored the magically historic schoolhouse elements, utilizing Americana

Danish/Swedish, and English/Welsh finishes and furnishings with a strong adherence to antiquity. We sourced antique objects, from pillows to benches to baskets, and combined the timeless charm of these items with more modern elements. We honored the Arts & Crafts elements of the cabin with a commissioned piece by the talented textile artist Eliza Bentz, who wove natural grasses and wool together to create a beautiful plaid-inspired piece that hangs perfectly above a school-house desk. It also serves another function - hiding the thermostat that otherwise protrudes from the wall in a rather abrupt way. Eliza designed a wonderfully unique hanging system that allowed the piece to hang off the wall just enough to accommodate this request.
